हिन्दी हमारे देश भारत की राष्ट्रभाषा है। इस भाषा को समृद्ध करने के लिए अंग्रेजी तथा संस्कृत के महत्त्वपूर्ण ग्रन्थों का हिन्दी में अनुवाद हो रहा है। यह कार्य सरकारी और गैर-सरकारी अनेक संस्थाएँ कर रही हैं। मुझको भी केन्द्रीय पारिभाषिक शब्दावली आयोग में पुस्तकालय विज्ञान के पारिभाषिक शब्दों का हिन्दी पर्याय बनाने के लिए एक सदस्य बनाया गया था। अंग्रेजी के टेक्निकल शब्दों के हिन्दीकरण में संस्कृत भाषा सर्वाधिक सक्षम भाषा है। यह सर्वमान्य तथ्य है। हिन्दी से संस्कृत और हिन्दी से अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद करने की शिक्षा विद्यालयों में छात्र-छात्राओं को दी जाती है। इसी प्रकार अंग्रेजी से हिन्दी और संस्कृत से हिन्दी में अनुवाद करने की शिक्षा भी विद्यालयों से विश्वविद्यालयों तक दी जाती है। इसी शिक्षा के फलस्वरूप संस्कृत के महाकाव्यों, नाटकों एवं कथा साहित्य के ग्रन्थों तथा अन्य विषयों के ग्रन्थों के अनुवाद हिन्दी में हुए हैं जिनसे
हिन्दी के अध्येता लाभ प्राप्त कर रहे हैं। इसी प्रकार अंग्रेजी के प्रसिद्ध साहित्यिक ग्रन्थों एवं अन्य विषयों के ग्रन्थों के अनुवाद हिन्दी और संस्कृत भाषा में हो गये हैं जिनका अध्ययन करके हिन्दी और संस्कृत के जानकार व्यक्ति ज्ञान प्राप्त कर रहे हैं। इस प्रकार एक भाषा से किसी दूसरी भाषा में अनुवाद कार्य की
आवश्यकता और महत्ता अब अधिक बढ़ गयी है।
